Sport at Bussage including Physical Education
Welcome to Physical Education at Bussage! At Bussage, PE is more than just being active—it’s about developing confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love of physical activity. Our creative approach to teaching and learning is designed to inspire enthusiasm, build resilience, and help children understand the importance of health and wellbeing.
Our vision:
Our goal is to equip children with the skills to move confidently, think
strategically, and work collaboratively. We encourage pupils to challenge themselves, support others, and recognise the value of both individual achievement and team success.Through this area of learning, the children will be able to rely heavily on Bussage Learning Power, in particular Polly Penguin and Bella Bee.
“Sport has literally changed my life. I’m here because of sport. It has given me a lot of confidence, a lot of courage, and a lot of discipline. It’s helped me to be the person that I’ve grown to be today.” - Serena Williams
“We miss 100 percent of the shots we don’t take” Wayne Gretzky
What is a Sportsperson?
At Bussage, we believe a sportsperson is someone who is active, determined, and motivated to improve. Learning in PE means developing physical skills alongside important personal qualities such as resilience, teamwork, and respect.
“Sport teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose - it teaches you about life.” - Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King is a former tennis player from America. She is seen by many players as one of the greatest female tennis players of all time.
Sportspersons are enthusiastic—they participate fully, try their best, and challenge themselves to improve. They learn new skills, practise regularly, and understand that progress comes through effort and perseverance. Whether working individually or as part of a team, they show cooperation, encouragement, and fairness.
They also reflect on their performance, set goals, and respond positively to feedback. A sportsperson demonstrates good sportsmanship, celebrates success, and learns from setbacks.
At the heart of PE is a love of movement and a desire to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.
“A successful competition for me is always going out there and putting 100 percent into whatever I’m doing. It’s not always winning ... People, I think, mistake that it’s just winning. Sometimes it could be, but for me, it’s hitting the best sets I can, gaining confidence and having a good time and having fun.” - Simone Biles
Simone Biles is an American gymnast who has won an incredible 7 Olympic titles and is known for her fun, enthusiastic routines and great success in the sport.

Our Physical Education Curriculum
At Bussage, our PE curriculum is designed to develop physical competence, confidence, and enjoyment. We offer a broad and balanced programme that provides opportunities for all pupils to succeed and excel. Every child experiences 2 hours of dedicated PE curriculum time per week and in addition to this the children participate in the daily mile. There are often opportunities built in to other curriculum areas for children to be able to use their bodies physically, allowing them movement and alongside this, for balance, the importance of physical health is taught alongside the importance of good mental health and wellbeing.
Through a variety of activities, children develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, and fitness. Our lessons are inclusive, engaging, and progressive, ensuring all pupils can build on prior learning and achieve their full potential.
We engage pupils through:
- Skill Development: Learning and refining fundamental movement and sport-specific skills
- Teamwork and Collaboration: Working together in games and group activities
- Healthy Competition: Participating in sports and challenges that build resilience and determination
- Wellbeing: Learning the importance of keeping fit and healthy in order to promote good wellbeing and a heathy mind.
Children are given opportunities to experience a wide range of sports and physical activities, helping them to discover their interests and strengths. Children's participation in physical activity outside of regular curriculum time is tracked, and those who don't actively seek to join school clubs are encouraged to give them a go!
Active lunchtimes are planned with support from Atlas Sports and in conjunction with out sports leaders.
The PE curriculum is carefully planned across each Key Stage to ensure progression in skills, knowledge, and understanding.
In Reception, children will:
- Develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, and balancing
- Explore movement through play and physical activities
- Begin to understand the importance of being active
PE in EYFS is part of physical development, where children build coordination, control, and confidence through both structured and free play activities.
Throughout Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils will learn to:
- Develop and apply a range of physical skills
