Year 4 - Journey Round the World

 

Geography

Over the past couple of weeks, year 4 have been actively engaged in enhancing their geographical knowledge through the use of atlases. We have focused particularly on significant lines of latitude, identifying the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Capricorn. Our explorations have not only centred on these prominent markers but have also extended to understanding time zones and the significance of the Prime Meridian, also known as the Greenwich Meridian. These concepts have provided the students with a solid foundation in understanding our world's geographical layout and the relationship between various locations.

 

Journey Round the World - Art - Theme book covers

Year 4 have displayed fantastic artistic skills, creating their theme book covers. The children used their previous knowledge of water colour painting to create a colour wash background. They carefully blended one colour of paint into another. They then used their mark making and shading skills to colour the world. Their inspiration came from the front cover of the trilogy of books we are reading to support our theme, "The boy who biked the world."

 Year 4 have welcomed Gloucestershire Music Hub this term, supporting our music lessons. We are grateful to the PTA providing funds for the children to have the experience of learning a new instrument. The children are being supported to read sheet music and learning musical language and terminology. We are looking forward to welcoming friends and family to a concert later on in the year.

 

 

 

Welcome to Class 4!

The children have settled well into their new class routines and have been enjoying our Geography-based theme 'Journey Round the World'. In English, we are enjoying a book by Alistair Humphreys, 'The boy who biked the world'. It is a fictionalised story based on the authors own experience of cycling round the world. In Geography, we will be looking at each of the continents and how they compare to one another. This will include discussing physical and human characteristics and studying maps. We started the theme with a fun trail, finding out about facts from a selection of European countries which proved extremely popular with the children!
